<![CDATA[Bullough's Pond Association - News]]>Sun, 21 Sep 2025 13:24:12 -0700Weebly<![CDATA[Invasives Pulled & Railings Painted!]]>Wed, 14 Jun 2017 15:57:38 GMThttps://www.bulloughspond.org/news/invasives-pulled-railings-paintedThe BPA had a great day on Saturday, May 20, when a group of stalwart volunteers, led by Professor Eric Olson, removed infestations of Garlic Mustard and Japanese Knotweed, and made impressive progress in removing Oriental Bittersweet along the east bank of the pond.  We are grateful as well to Commissioner Bob DeRubeis and Dave Mandatori of the Parks & Recreation Department. Mr. Mandatori organized a second group to repaint the railings along the Bullough Park edge of the site. The bank is looks better, and is better, with fewer invasives and spruced-up railings.  Stay tuned for future invasive pull volunteer opportunities...

People walking and running around Bullough's Pond on August 18, 2014 were delighted to see a white heron on the banks and circling overhead.  

A pair of blue herons are frequent visitors to Bullough's Pond, but August 18, 2014 represents the first recorded sighting of a white heron at the pond.

BPA President Marilyn Campbell and BPA Media & Events Director Kathleen Kouril Grieser led a spring clean up of the pond's banks on April 27, Newton Serves Day.


Thanks to all the hard-working volunteers and BPA members who came with work boots, gardening gloves, pruners, rakes - and great enthusiasm - to help tidy up the pond's banks in time for warmer weather.

The Bullough's Pond Association Annual Meeting was held on Wednesday, October 23, 2013, at 7:30 PM at 258 Mill St., Newtonville. The meeting was well attended.  Members voted to approve an amended set of bylaws and elected a new Board of Directors.  The Board selected the following roles for the directors:
President: Marilyn Campbell
Vice President: Alex Beam
Treasurer: Joseph Tischler
Secretary: Richard Lockwood
Media & Events Director: Kathleen Kouril Grieser
Environmental Director: Laura Studen
Role TBD Director: John Davidow

U.S. Senator Ed Markey and Mayor Setti Warren stopped by the BPA booth at Newtonville Village Day this afternoon.  Mayor Warren kindly told Senator Markey that the Association had hosted "a terrific event" in the Bullough's Pond Fair earlier in the day.  


The Senator asked BPA board members at the booth about the pond, and they were able to tell him about the upcoming need for dredging of the pond to protect it from build up of silt and pollutants, and to prevent downstream flooding in Newtonville.  


Both the Fair in the morning and the BPA's participation in this afternoon's Village Day festivities were successful in terms of raising awareness and in fundraising through sales of BPA logo mugs and notecards.

Mayor Setti Warren welcomed a crowd of more than 200 people to the Bullough's Pond Fair this morning, and called out the countdown to the Fair's sponsored kayak race.  After presenting the race cup to the winning kayak, the Mayor chatted with BPA board members and said he'd like to see the fair become an annual event.  Parks & Recreation Commissioner Bob DeRubeis also visited many of the events at the fair.  For a full account of all the fair's activities, click here: Bullough's Pond Fair

Newton Fire Department Lieutenant Mike Murphy  asked the BPA how he could help us (that's just the kind of guy he is), and we said, "Can you help us get our banners put up high for the Bullough's Pond Fair?".  Early this morning, Lt. Murphy and the firefighters of Ladder 3 came to Bullough's Pond just after their shift ended, on their own time, raised ladders and climbed high into the trees to hang BPA banners around the pond and over Dexter Road.  We were also delighted to learn that Lt. Kevin Mancini and his crew will be bringing a fire truck to the Fair for kids to visit.

Calling Bullough's Pond, "A Hidden Jewel", the Newton Tab today devoted the entire front cover of the paper's "Newton Life" section to the 350th anniversary of the pond, the role the Bullough's Pond Association has played in protecting the pond, and the upcoming Bullough's Pond Fair.

Reporter Trevor Jones interviewed BPA President Marilyn Campbell and BPA Media Director Kathleen Kouril Grieser for the beautifully-written piece.  He and the Tab's editor,
Emily Costello, prepared a gorgeous layout using historic images provided by the BPA and lovely new photos by Tab photographer Erin Prawoko.  A sidebar promoted the schedule of events for the fair on September 29.
